1 in 4 San Francisco residents is at risk of hunger due to low income, with the majority being BIPOC residents. Urban agriculture has emerged as an important approach to combating food insecurity, ensuring our community doesn’t go hungry. Access to fresh, healthy food shouldn’t be a luxury. It’s a human right.

In San Francisco, we have around 120 community gardens and urban farms — of those, 25 are run independently, and 20 grow produce without any financial support for their water. We’re fighting to fix that and expand access to water for those seeking to feed our communities.

Independent farms and gardens all over San Francisco have been struggling to pay for their water. Together, we have been advocating to create a new water rate category and policies for food-growing gardens and farms to lessen their financial burden and reduce the food insecurity in Bayview Hunters Point.
